Packasport System 60 Review

This carrier is strong, looks great, and is much sturdier than it's competitors. Plus it is sleek and doesn't look like I've strapped a big black box to my roof! I've owned my System 60 for 4 years. The finish is first class! No chipping, fading, or any other defects. The gas filled lid dampers work really well. Opening and closing the carrier is easy. The latches and key hardware truly is Marine-grade. No rust or even discoloration and mine has been in every weather imaginable. The competitor rood-top carriers are flimsy and are bouncy going down the rode. This carrier is sturdy and does not bounce while driving. It can be bought directly from the factory for significantly less than what this seller is asking.

Well worth it for the extra space or skis and boards. Out-of-the box had it on my Nissan Pathfinder in 5 minutes, great latching design. My guess is that it will fit almost all autos with cross bar roof racks. Loads of space, does seem a but long, the 1600 is a bit shorter and might look more proportional to my Pathifinder, this 1700 is probably best for the Tahoes, Escalades, and Yukons out there. In any case, awesome product, and Amazon has the best price and arrived (via some shipping company, not UPS) in about three days, pretty fast. No shipping issues for me.

Yakima has done a great job with this skybox which apparently was upgraded in 2009.The casing is heavy duty enough so that the upper shell stays up when it is raised. The upper shell can be raised from either side. Cords are attached to the upper shell so that it is easy to lower. The locking handles on the sides are sturdy and work well. The attachment system is amazingly easy to use and sturdy--no need to use tools or thread bolts.Attaching it to cross bars is easy and quick. The unit stays on the cross bars securely and I did not notice any road noise (although my cross bars produce a hum). It mates with most cross bars.If you are comparing this with the Yakima Pro model, note that while the Pro costs a lot more, the only difference with the Pro is that you get two tone unit rather than an all black one and two accessories which you can order a la carte for a lot less (the cargo net, which I also bought and like) or can provide yourself (the bottom pad). The two units are functionally identical.

I just used this carrier on a 1600-mile round trip from northern Illinois to North Carolina (on a 2005 Astro Van).On the return trip (September 14), we went through extreme hurricane force winds (aftermath from Hurricane Ike) of 75 MPH from all directions in Louisville, KY.The wind downed trees on the interstate, but the carrier held firmly and no rain entered despite an incredible amount of buffeting due to the winds.I was concerned that the sideways and up-and-down effects of severe buffeting might loosen the grips on the crossbar, but the grips were as tight when I arrived home as they were when I left home.I saw two top carriers that had separated from their vehicles and had been run over on I-65...that's how bad the wind was.

When I first got it it fit up well, but one of the saddles that sits on the cross rail broke.I called Thule customer service and they were very nice. They immediately sent four new saddles and said that I must have received one of their earlier units that had substandard saddles. They apparently discovered this recently and were very accommodating.I appreciate their fine customer service, although I am glad I had time to get the saddles before my trip.Suggest that you make certain that you have the most recent saddles.

Shipping service and tracking through Amazon was great, and the price was the best I could find!Thule 604 Ascent 1600 Rooftop Cargo Box (Black)

I recommend this product for anyone who needs extra room while traveling and do not want to spend a lot for the extra room. We have a Volvo XC90, however, when we travel with our pet (lab) it allows him to have room in the back and keep all of our belonging clean, dry, and without dog hair. We traveled more than 2000 miles without any problems.

About Thule
To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.
By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.
The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

Product Description:
Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog.

The titanium SkyBox Pro 16s offers an integrated accessory system for managing your gear. Enter the Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s rooftop cargo box, a futuristic-looking storage container that's ideal for toting moderate amounts of gear on camping or ski trips. Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox Pro 16s comes with quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the Pro 16s offers 16 cubic feet of storage, so you don't have to cram everything into the trunk or back seat of your car. Just load up the SkyBox Pro 16s and hit the road. Perhaps the coolest feature, however, is the aerodynamic shape, which reduces drag and cuts down on wind noise. As a result, you needn't worry about shelling out a ton of money for extra gas on long road trips.
The SkyBox Pro 16s also offers a new lid shape that's easier to grab even if you have particularly clumsy meat hooks. Plus, the lid is 50 percent stiffer than lids on previous Yakima cargo boxes, making it easier to open and shut with one hand. Other details include a Super Latch Security system that keeps your stuff safely inside; SKS locks; and a gear management net and cargo pad to secure and protect your stuff. Boasting an ultra-sleek titanium finish, the SkyBox Pro 16s measures 36 by 15 by 81 inches (W x H x D). All Yakima skyboxes carry a limited lifetime warranty.

Ordered this in the blind off Thule's recommendation for my 2010 Volkswagen TDi Sportswagon and 2005 Honda Odyssey. The box was shipped via ground and arrived in great condition.I ordered the areo bars and feet for my new Sportwagon but have the sqaure bars on my Odyssey. The box fits both with easy and rides nicely on both vehicles. The nice feature that Thule did not, nor any of the websites that I used to conduct my research, play up how easy it is to put on, much less swap between two different vehicles.

On the bottom of the cargo box, there are sliding anchors that allow you to place the box on either type of bars. This was covered in the all of the videos and write ups I could find, but the interesting thing is that they slide to accommodate at a minimum of around 21" and a maximum 36" distance between the front and rear bars.So there is no need to have both vehicles setup the same or worry about having to reposition the feet.Once you have the box positioned, then you secure it to the bars by twisting the knobs inside the box.

Truly a well engineered piece of equipment like all the other systems and components I have purchased through Thule.I believe this box is well worth the money and am glad I went with this box over the Atlantis model.I certainly do recommend this box to others!

First this thing is big, which is good. I looked at shorter cargo boxes but realized I would not be able to use them to transport my cross country ski's in (I'm a 6'1" and 230# and need long skis). However if you have a smaller SUV/hatchback it might get in the way of your rear door so be sure to measure. For the record I have an old 2000 passat wagon and it fits great (trunk opens fine and it doesn't stick out over the front of the roof at all), however again it might not be the best choice if you have a smallish CUV.

The two sided loading functionality it great. It can be slightly difficult to close the box, you have to kind of slam it a bit to make sure it latches. Other than that no complaints. It offers great cargo capacity. I have a newborn on the way and between the baby/car seat, the stroller, by dogs (in the hatchback area), luggage, portable crib, etc., there just wasn't going to be enough room in the car. Now a lot of that stuff can go up top, freeing up valuable car space.

One thing I would recommend getting is a lift for your garage to store the thing on as it is huge. Thule makes one Thule 571 Roof Mount Cargo Box Storage Lift. Another option is getting a Racor lift Racor PHL-1R Pro HeavyLift 4-by-4-Foot Cable-Lifted Storage Rack. I have both and they are excellent products (I use the Thule to store the cargo box and the Racor alternates between storing the lawnmower in winter and the snow-blower in summer). A word of warning with the lifts, you do need to find ceiling studs. If your garage ceiling studs are irregularly spaced, you will have to rig something out of additional boards/plywood to safely install it. Shouldn't be a problem on any recently built home, but might be if you have an older garage that was built a bit oddly.

This is my second rocket box. I love the room provided especially for long items, skis, fishing poles. I really does hold a lot of stuff.

There's no wind noise and no measurable affect on fuel economy. I can easily find my vehicle in a crowded parking lot.

The new improved attachment clamps fit my factory rack without the need for buying rail mounts like in the old version saving me $100.

I did prefer the old style supports though the new ones are probably more reliable than the older "shock type" found on auto hatches and hoods.

If you need storage space you can't go wrong with the big Rocket Box.

It's Yakima's most popular rooftop cargo box ever, and for good reason. That's because the RocketBox 16 offers plenty of cargo space for skis, paddles, and even jousting poles. The RocketBox 16 measures 92 by 26 by 15 inches (L x W x H), with a total storage area of 16 cubic feet. That's enough for a weekend's worth of gear for three or more people, or enough skis and boards for a carload of ski bums and snow bunnies. In fact, the long and lean design means there isn't much you can't carry. More significantly, the RocketBox 16 fits on round, square, and most factory crossbars, and includes quick-installation hardware and SKS locks. The bag is nice and the size is great (and the no PVC is where Thule needs to head).... BUT... it ripped the first day I used it (had a stroller in it, and the seam ripped straight through) and it is definitely not 'weather-proof', it rained for only a few minutes on our trip and the inside items were wet. Thule Atlantis Cargo Box Review

We bought this cargo box after reading reviews of people who bought smaller sizes and wished for more room.Yes, it is more expensive, but it has all the room we need for our growing family, and is durable enough that I can easily see it outlasting our vehicle. It is light weight, but I wouldn't call it fragile. The only scenario I can imagine it cracking is through abuse, like someone stepping right on the middle of it or something.

There is a huge amount of space. It has pretty much the same footprint as our three-cushion sofa.I worried that it would protrude off the front badly on our Kia Sedona, but it fits nicely and looks like it belongs there. It's unobtrusive enough that we don't mind just leaving it on there if it's only a couple weeks until the next trip.We borrowed a fabric cargo bag previously, which we always took off when unpacking at our destination because inevitably a strap end would come loose and bang all over the place. This cargo box has no such issues.

Installation was a snap.It took under 10 minutes, including installing the crossbars on our roof rack, which weren't included.Compared to the fabric cargo bag we used previously, this is easier to install, holds more, and is easier to load. The hinges which let you open it from either side are ingenious. It's a little awkward off the car, but feels as natural while on the car as opening a hatch back.Unlike some other models I've read reviews for, this one came fully assembled.Despite its size, it is light enough I could probably put it on the roof myself if necessary, but with my wife helping to lift it, it was very easy.

It rains frequently here, and we haven't had any problems with leaks, but we haven't tested it in rain at freeway speeds yet.

Check out my customer image. It shows the Atlantis 2100 packed and hinged open.

Was very easy to mount on the Sequoia, and feels pretty sturdy (and watertight).Absolutely no wind noise or rattling could be heard inside the vehicle at 75 MPH.I bought it because the width and height makes it better for carrying family stuff than comparable size Thule or Yakima boxes, though it's not long enough for skis.Low price is a huge bonus.I also like that it opens from the back instead of the side, since on my tall vehicle the easiest way to reach the box is standing on the rear bumper.I looked at the big name boxes, and I can't see how they are worth 2.5x as much.

**UPDATE**Have now taken on a few long trips. It did not seem to affect gas mileage at all, and stayed dry inside through 300 miles of downpour.I have to take it off to fit in the garage, which would be true of any box, but I can get it on or off in less than 10 minutes.I fit 2 carry-on suitcases, 4 sleeping bags, a stroller, a full-frame baby backpack, and a small baby bouncer seat inside.

First the material it is made of is thin and flimsy. It is certainly not as strong as some of the boxes made from ABS plastic. If you park in the sun for any time the plastic softens to the point where you may have trouble getting the hinges to engage to hold the top up. Another result of the softened plastic is the sagging of the hinge side of the lower portion of the box. This causes the top to sag down slightly reducing the clearance for loading items.

Another issue is the assembly. It was painfully cumbersome, and I am very mechanically inclined. It's definitely a two man job, one to hold the top while the other attaches and tightens the nuts and bolts.

Attaching to my vehicle (04 Dodge Durango) was a pain as well. The height of the vehicle made it challenging enough but attaching the "U" bolts on the hinge side was a real pain. If you have a smaller vehicle like a sedan or a Subaru Outback or something like that it may be easier

But, this thing is huge and holds a lot. We had 2 larger rollaway suitcases, two large duffle bags, 2 sleeping bags and 2 pillows and had room for coats and toiletry bags. It really hold quite a bit. But one of the biggest advantages is has is the price. For the cost of a competing unit from yakithule you can by 5 of these things.

I highly recommend this unit if your budget is tight, especially if you can get someone else to assemble and install it...

I've used two different bag carriers in the past. Both were pains to use, especially in winter, when the zippers and fabric were stiff. In those cases, too, the zippers were on top, difficult to reach and stuff luggage. This Rola was a relief for my budget and back.Sturdy aluminum frame in a bottom sleeve that's separate from luggage compartment (although part of a bracket ripped my inner fabric while inserting frame).Flexible soft-side design has allowed me to fit a large family tent, 6 sleeping bags, about 6 duffel/backpacks, and 3 folded air mattresses (easily stuffed from one of 3 zippered doors with weather flaps). On my 04 Durango, with crossbars, installation was simple and allowed enough room alongside for 6 camp chairs. I deducted a star b/c fabric ripped and instructions were poorly written.I love the collapsibility and provided rain fly.Although I was searching for a reasonable shell carrier, this seems like it is a better value. Smart design!

i used this cargo box to travel cross country. it fit on the factory roof rack of my subaru and did not shift from highway speeds or leak water during rainy spells. i found that the overall height of the box on top of the car was not too great so no disaster would be caused when i pulled out of the garage, like some chevy chase movie. the bugs wash off easily and the box itself is not overly heavy so installation and any clean up is simple.it holds plenty of gear and one should be conscious of the weight restrictions on the rack itself. i am sure overloading could be done easily enough. It worked great for holding camping and fishing gear and other compressible stuffs. i feel it was a good buy.
