I received this product and one of the seams was ripped out.Contacted the seller and got great support, they sent out a replacement carrier immediately.Received the second one and after the first big storm I went through, opened up the carrier to find it filled with water.Drained it and found holes in the seams where the stitches were located on the seams. If they simply taped the seams this would not be a problem.Don't recommend this item if you are looking for something waterproof.

We have loved this thing. It holds a ton of stuff, waterproof and tough as nails.I have used it in the rain and the snow.Went on a 8 hour trip in the rain and everything in it stayed perfectly dry.The tie downs are great also. You do not have to worry about keeping up with straps to keep the bag on.This is the only bag I found that said it was waterproof. The others I researched all said weather resistant, that worried me.Great deal and I highly recommend it.

Lund 601006 Cargo Carrier Heavy Duty Storage Bag Review

Lund 601006 Cargo Carrier Heavy Duty Storage Bag
Average Reviews:

The quality of this bag is excellent; however, Amazon's PHOTOGRAPH shows a roof-top storage bag attached to the roof rack, while this larger bag was designed to be oriented from side-to-side on a REAR RACK THAT PROJECTS FROM THE TRAILER HITCH.
To use it on our roof rack I had to cut a plywood platform for it to sit on, and run additional straps over the top. Since one orients things lengthwise on top of a car, the front end of the bag does not look like the one in the photograph---the front end actually has a wind-catching flap across it! Our 2,800-mile trip included a lot of stops to apply more and more bungie cords (to stop the flapping). At least the dogs enjoyed the many stops. For the trip back we've installed a luggage-securing bungie NET over it. The BAG itself is EXCELLENT!

Wow I thought THULE was THE company for this type of stuff.Boy was I mad after a trip from NJ to SC.The bag was mounted to my roofrack and was a little noisy (top be expected). But when I got to SC and opened the bag....the horror! The inside lining shredded and flaked off on everything! There were also 2 holes along the to seam! What a mess...and I couldn't use the bag on the way home....had to ship my stuff home!I just wrote THULE....we'll see if they come thru for the customer
Sept. 12, 2005 THULE sent me a replacement, an Escape 2.Great customer service....but does this mean the Escape is better? Is the Quest inferior? There was no coorespondence with the repalcement...I'll try it out this summer.

About Thule
To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.
By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.
The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

We used this item on a trip from Kentucky to Dallas and it worked great on the way to Dallas. When we loaded the carrier back up for the return trip a buckle on one of the four main straps that secures the carrier to the vehicle broke. Luckily we were paranoid about the carrier coming loose since we had never used one of these before so we had taken precautions by purchasing and utilizing heavy duty rubber straps and rope to tie it to the luggage rack. With three straps, 10 heavy duty rubber straps and rope we felt comfortable that it wouldn't fly off.I would gladly have given this product a better rating had it not broken on our first trip. The size is great, accomodates lots of stuff and is easy to use.

The bag is nice and the size is great (and the no PVC is where Thule needs to head).... BUT... it ripped the first day I used it (had a stroller in it, and the seam ripped straight through) and it is definitely not 'weather-proof', it rained for only a few minutes on our trip and the inside items were wet. Probably a great bag for soft items in the desert... but not for all the time use...Come on Thule!Make a better PVC free bag!We know you can do it.

We drive a Honda Civic and have a Yakima roof rack with two bike trays, and were looking for a smaller "soft side" carrier to fit into this space. This cargo carrier fit nicely inside this space and appears easily adaptable to spaces that are not exactly 34" by 34".The carrier material is sturdy and coated on the inside with a PVC coating. The zipper is a double pull zipper, which is nice because it can be adjusted to open from one side for easy access to the contents inside. The straps are long - almost too long, in fact, so we may end up cutting off the excess strap material. The carrier is advertised as water resistant and not waterproof, and so our plan is to primarily use the carrier for things that we don't mind getting wet, and then pack other items inside a garbage bag first before putting them inside the carrier. We used the carrier for the first time this past weekend on a camping trip and it worked great! We put our folding chairs inside, along with some Thermarest pads and pillows. We drove at speeds up to 70 mph and did not notice any more noise than what we usually hear with the roof rack.We did manage to drive through a TREMENDOUS rainstorm lasting 10-15 minutes. Some of the contents inside the carrier did get a bit damp, but the pillows that were stored in a garbage bag were completely dry.Overall, we are very happy with this product and would highly recommend it!!

Keeper 07203 Waterproof Roof Top Cargo Bag - 15 Cubic Feet Review

Keeper 07203 Waterproof Roof Top Cargo Bag - 15 Cubic Feet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I purchased this product for a trip of 500 miles across Texas to go on the existing roof rack of our Toyota FJ Cruiser. It is advertised to fit most racks and it fit ours perfectly.I think we had more than 15 cubic feet of luggage, dog food, and bedding stuffed into it as we were also bringing our two huge dogs (no, they weren't in the carrier!).Loading was easy and the zippers worked fine. The only problem we had was adjusting the straps. It took forever to take them up the first time we tied it down, but on the return trip it went much easier. The strap configuration seems awkward, but possibly can be adjusted before loading, which I'll try next time.

On several reviews of similar products wind noise was mentioned, like it was to be expected, but we noticed NO noise even when driving 80mph through west Texas. The ties never loosened and the load was just as secure when we arrived as when we started. But the best thing about this product is that it REALLY IS WATERPROOF.We drove through 100 miles of pouring Gulf Coast rain on the trip home, the kind where cars on the interstate are driving 40mph with their flashers on and waiting under overpasses for it to slack up.I just knew that everything was going to be soaked when we got home.I was amazed to find that NOTHING got wet - not even damp. The design of the zipper compartment(with flaps closed by velcro) worked perfectly. We were very pleased considering that some of the similar carriers cost alot more than this one.

Thule 867 Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag Review

Thule 867 Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag
Average Reviews:

We bought the Thule Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag for a roadtrip from Texas to Florida.

1. The bag was easy to use, and the instructions were good.It attached right onto our roof rack with no probolem.I had read other reviews and knew to have safety pins (8 to be exact) to secure the excess strapping to the bag, or it will make noise while you're driving.

2. It rained on us part of the way down, but our luggage was inside plastic bags. The plastic bags did get wet, but our luggage was fine.I would say that the bag is weather resistant as claimed becasue there wasn't much water in the bag after the storm.

3. The bag produced drag, and it affected our gas mileage and gas was over $4.00 / gallon at the time.

4. Removing and putting on the bag at each of our stops wasn't a big deal.We only had 2 suit cases, and a toiletry bag in there - so it was a snap to get them out/in, and then the bag off/on.

The bottom line is that if you need extra space in your vehicle, don't have or want to spend the money on a hard top cargo carrier, and probably if you're not driving 1600 miles roun-trip (my opinion that this better for shorter trips) - then this bag is right for you.

WeatherTech 60001 RackSack Cargo Carrier Review

WeatherTech 60001 RackSack Cargo Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like WeatherTech products, so when I saw this one, I decided to buy it, and stop searching all the other choices.I like the WeatherTech Company, and they have a REP for perfect products!

After a trip from Ohio to South Florida and back, I felt I knew enough about it to review it and give some general info.So this is based on ONE long trip in the rain... (I am a retired truck driver, so have some knowledge in this area)

First, it's well made, it has it's own storage bag that yes, it really will fit back into!

Got the usual great Amazon service!Fast delivery, no damage, and lowest price I could find!

Soft or Hard - which to choose?
Here's my thinking on the subject:Hard is better, but much more expensive, and takes much more room to store when not in use.Since this is not an item I will use more than 2-3 times per year, cost and storage are big factors to me.If I were to use it more often, then a hard Carrier would do the job much better.OK - Soft, now why this one?
As I said at the top, I like the Company, and knew the product would be of great quality.I was right, heavy material, double seams everywhere, strong zipper, great attachment system!

A few things I learned during the study and search for this; if your roof rack has cross rails - you need to measure the space between them, or make sure they can be removed - if not, you will have to go to a hard Carrier!Because this is some 30+ inches long, you want this to sit on the roof itself, NOT on any cross-rails!On my 06 Tucson, there is only 21' between the rails, and it was a chore to remove them (on my Tucson, the cross-rails are meant to not be moved, and they had some extra parts built up around the rails that had to be removed first). So scope all this out first regardless of which soft Carrier you buy!

I do not believe that any brand of soft Carrier would be truly water-proof, so get past that, and plan for some dampness - that was my thinking! The racksack uses a "rubber-backed" type material (PVC, etc), but water *could* come in through the seams, or around the zipper. So, I simply used garbage bags around what we were worried about.

The straps can be used on the front and back, or on the sides - since I had removed my cross rails, I could only attach on the sides.YES, it's a pain to load - I am 6' tall - but not tall enough - so a ladder, or stand on the door edge in the open door, or, load on the ground and heave it onto the roof---not an easy way to do it.And NO, it must be unloaded at night for those of you on long trips as there is no way to lock it, another reason for a[...] hard shell lockable Carrier - But, I knew this when I bought it, just bringing up "gotcha's" that others may not have thought of.

Anyhow, the straps work very well! The buckles hold well, and I felt no need for any extra straps (hindsight proved me correct as well) - remember, loose strap ends will do damage if they flap going down the road! The racksack uses this neat velcro way of rolling the end, and self-tying the ends so they do not flap.If not, or if it does not work for you, simply tuck the ends under the bag - just make sure they do not flap.

Gas mileage will go down when at speed. If loaded properly, there is not much extra noise, but at freeway speeds, a drop in MPG is a real possibility - regardless of which bag/Carrier you get.

On my small SUV (Tucson) driving at 65-70 on the cruise control I normally get 22-23MPG, the best I did with the bag was 19.8MPG - so in my case, the drop was rather considerable! This is more a issue of the vehical than the type of bag used.On my car, I would get roughly the same drop regardless of which Carrier bought (the exception might be some of the streamlined hard Carriers).

To sum it up, I like the product, it worked well for me, and the luxury of being able to bring items on the car trip that I could not have taken without the bag was a good trade-off for the loading hassles and the lower MPG - so, this is both a review and recomendation of the 'Racksack' - and a how-to in general for roof top carriers.

If you'd like more info on the Racksack, Google the Company name and go to their website - lots of images and info on the product.Very good product for the price - was roughly 50% cheaper at Amazon too!

I hope this helps!

Rain-X 161040 Water-Resistant Roof Top Cargo Bag Review

Rain-X 161040 Water-Resistant Roof Top Cargo Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this carrier because our current carrier, a hitch-based carrier on the rear of the car, put too much weight on the rear of the vehicle, making it hard to steer in wet or icy conditions.

The bag is made of VERY heavy vinyl-type fabric. So heavy in fact that it is hard to open, close, and zip. But once you get it worked out (I brought it inside to warm it up, which helped a lot) it is a nice accessory.

The straps were easy to lace through the eyelets, and although it was not detailed in the instructions how to lace them through, I was able to work it out in no time. Instructions could have been clearer.

The zippers are very heavy duty, but because the fabric is so heavy they are difficult to open or close. I believe this is a function of the fabric being water resistant. I found myself trying to stretch the creases / folds out of the fabric in order to pull the zipper. Even a TINY crease will prevent the zipper from moving as the fabric is so stiff.

The zipper is covered by a large flap on the bottom that velcros to a large flap above the zipper, essentially creating a seal that I really can't imagine ever leaking (unless you put the bag on backwards, with the zipper facing forward instead of backwards). We never went through rain but we went through snow with no issues of leakage.

There was NO flapping or moving about while we were underway. The eight way staps held tight and held everything securely, without putting stress on the bag itself since it covered the bag like a net as opposed to tying to the bag.

Last of all, it held about 100 pounds of clothes and gear without any stress or strain. The van was much more manageable with the weight being put in the middle of the car instead of on the hitch. Very handy in the snowy conditions in which we were navigating.

Of course it was much less convenient than the hitch mounted unit (hard to reach), but there are tradeoffs with everything (we spent $500 on our "Cargo Carrier" for our hitch).

Hard to beat for $50!

My only real complaint is the stiffness of opening and closing the zipper. I wish they had put straps on the zippers, and I'll probably find some and do it myself.

Rola 59102 Expandable Hitch Tray Cargo Bag Review

Rola 59102 Expandable Hitch Tray Cargo Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this for a recent trip of about 1000 miles round trip and it was just what we wanted. Well, I suppose it could be just a bit larger but such is life. The liner/casing is very sturdy - it displayed no wear from the trip. The zippers are beefy and they withstood a lot of yanking around. Also, when I tossed it on the Lund 20x60 hitch carrier (also bought on Amazon) I stuffed a big suitcase in it, tried unsuccessfully to shove it around to get it in place, then realized I was getting caught on the bolts that face inward on the Lund. I grimaced and figured it would have torn huge holes in the casing but it was barely punctured! The expandable top is great although I can't imagine ever not wanting it to be expanded. The integrated straps are smart although the buckles seemed a bit chinsy. They held just fine, but I might replace them with belts that have ratchets on them and strap it around the entire bag to the carrier. We'll see - after 1000 miles with 3 little ones we might hold off on that next trip for a bit...
